2010-11 ATHLETIC INFORMATION

2010-11 ATHLETIC INFORMATION

Below is information that is important for student-athletes and parents to have in order to prepare for and be eligible to participate in Visitation athletics. Please read through the information carefully and do not hesitate to contact Mike Brill, school athletic director, if you have any questions. He may be reached at mbrill@vischool.org or 651-683-1717.

I. NEW FOR 2010-11 SCHOOL YEAR: CONCUSSION TESTING

This fall Visitation will utilize an innovative concussion management program for our student-athletes participating in contact sports. The program is called ImPACT (Immediate Post Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) and involves an online, computerized exam that each athlete takes prior to the athletic season.

If the athlete is believed to have suffered a concussion during competition, the exam is taken again and the data is compared to the baseline test. This information is then used as a tool to assist the athletic trainer and treating physicians in determining the extent of the injury, monitoring recovery, and in making safe return to play decisions.

All students wishing to participate in Minnesota State High School League level Soccer, Hockey, or Lacrosse will be required to take the ImPACT test before they are allowed to participate in those sports at Visitation. The cost of the baseline test during this first year will be picked up by the athletic department. Any post-concussion testing costs will remain the responsibility of the athlete’s parents.
If an injury of this nature occurs, we will be in contact with you. Please keep in mind; we view this only as a tool in the process of determining whether or not a student athlete is fit to resume competition. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of each family to see a doctor of your choosing if an injury like this occurs and determine if the results of the ImPact test will be utilized in making a decision about a return to competition.

About the program:
Founded by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s Sports Concussion Program, this software system is utilized throughout professional sports and has been mandated in the NHL and NFL and utilized by US Soccer and countless colleges and high schools across the country, it is fast becoming the “Gold Standard” in recognizing and managing head injuries. Additional information can be found at www.impacttest.com.

The exam takes about 25-30 minutes and is non-invasive. The program is basically set-up as a “video-game” type format. It tracks neurocognitive information such as memory, reaction time, brain processing speed, and concentration. For example, in one part of the exam, a dozen common words appear one at a time on the screen for about one second each. The athlete is then later asked what words were displayed. It is a simple exam and most who take it enjoy the challenge of the test.

One of the reasons concussions are so dangerous is a condition called Second Impact Syndrome. If an athlete sustains a second concussion before completely recovering from the first, the results can be deadly. We understand the competitive nature of sports, but we always hold the athlete’s health and safety as our top priority.

To register and take the IMPACT baseline test, please contact Rachel Winthrop, Concussion Clinic Community Liason, Bethesda Hospital, at 651-232-2646 for an appointment. If you are unable to schedule an appointment with Bethesda, you may contact Mike Brill, Visitation Athletic Director, at 651-683-1717 and sign up to take the test on one of the following dates and times:
    Wednesday, July 21, 3:00PM – 4:00PM, Visitation Computer Lab

Athletic Department Philosophy

The Convent of the Visitation School’s philosophy statement affirms “that learning is, in the words of our school motto, not for school but for life - non scholae sed vitae.”  We believe that interscholastic athletics is an integral part of the total Visitation educational program and reflects our philosophy as much as any other.

Interscholastic sports not only enrich a young person’s educational experience, they create an opportunity to learn skills and values not provided for in the regular curriculum.  Participation in athletics will not only improve motor skills and develop physical fitness, but students will also learn self-discipline and build self-confidence.  The realization of group ideas, ability to think as an individual and as a member of a group, sportsmanship and fairness, respect for others, and the desire and effort to succeed and excel are just some of the values we emphasize in our program.  It is the ultimate aim of our athletic program to teach and develop these skills and values among all of our participants.

Although our first priority is the attainment of the aforementioned educational objectives, winning, involving the spirit of competition, is an immediate objective in all athletic contests.  The desire to win can and should be used to stimulate the achievement of the ultimate objectives.

Finally, we believe that participation in interscholastic athletics is a privilege that carries with it responsibilities to the school, to the team, to the student body, to the community, and to the student herself.  In her play and in her conduct, she is representing all of these groups.   It is only by helping a student to clearly understand our objectives and by carefully directing her in appropriate, well- planned learning situations that she will achieve these goals.  This is our challenge and our responsibility.

General Objectives:

  • To develop an understanding of our athletic philosophy and the value of athletics within our total educational program.
  • To develop in each athlete, improved motor skills and overall health and physical fitness.
  • To emphasize each individual’s growth in self-discipline, emotional maturity and self-confidence.
  • To develop the ability to think as an individual and as a member of a group.
  • To develop an understanding of the role of the individual in the implementation of team goals.
  • To develop the desire and commitment to participate, succeed and excel through positive athletic competition.
  • To provide instruction in the essential rules of the game and the value of conforming to these rules.
  • To encourage respect for the rights of others and for authority.
  • To emphasize the principles of fairness in all of our interactions with others.
  • To promote student leadership and an appreciation of the democratic process.
  • To provide opportunities for developing a strong sense of school spirit among students, coaches, faculty and parents.
  • To provide opportunities for positive, enjoyable and safe experiences for all participants.
